Healthy Habits Beyond Food & Fitness

There is more to being “healthy” than food & fitness.. True health is the complete unity of the mind, body, & soul. When one is off.. the others will suffer. Its all about finding a balance. Here are some tips to balancing your health journey beyond just eating good foods & working out.

Practice Gratitude

This is a game changer!! It’s as simple as stopping to smell the roses.. so to speak. Practicing gratitude is taking time to be grateful for all things in life. Taking a moment when you step outside to really breathe in the fresh air.. feel the sun on your skin. It’s also very helpful when it comes to your diet. How so? Well when we slow down and take the time to chew our food, enjoy all the flavors.. be grateful for what we are eating. It really helps you embrace good, real foods and you are less likely to over eat! There are so many ways to practice gratitude throughout your day.. it may surprise you!

Expand Your Knowledge

Knowledge is POWER! We have so much technology and information at our finger tips.. we have no excuse to not take advantage of it and learn as much as we can. Read, watch videos, and listen to audio books. Especially when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. We have to educate ourselves on health, and not solely rely on what doctors and the government says is “normal” and “healthy”. I have also been really enjoying books to help me expand mentally and spiritually.. helping me to find my inner peace. It’s a big world.. take advantage of it and learn something 😁

Meditate/Yoga

To learn how to control your mind and be one with your body is a incredibly powerful tool. To me, yoga and meditation run hand and hand. This may be due to the fact yoga taught me how to clear my mind and be able to meditate. I started with basic AM yoga videos years ago by Rodney Lee and it changed my life. I struggle with anxiety and my mind runs constantly. Listening to the instructor guide me through the poses on how to feel my breath and my body, essentially taught me how to mediate. Just learning how to practice basic deep breathing and repeating a Mantra over and over can help calm you so much! I even use “Breath in, breath out”.. and just keep repeating it over and over until my mind is calm. Learning to feel your breath and calm your mind will help you grow even deeper in your yoga practice. Yoga goes beyond calming the mind and is so good for your physical well being as well. Being a fitness lover.. yoga is a daily for me to get in some good stretching and help with recovery. Gaiam TV is a great way to get started.. it’s like the online Netflix for everything yoga and then some 😉

Keep Less Stuff

Don’t clutter your life with stuff. Our society says buy more, want more, need more! Too much stuff not only clutters your physical space but your spiritual space as well. I have always been too use negative experiences to make something positive..so to speak. My mother and my grandmother were so bad at holding on to stuff. My mom, was emotionally attached to her things for years. As I got older, I realized it’s because she was finding comfort and security in her things that she didn’t have in her life. I could have easily been on the same path but seeing her do it made me reflect on myself and learn to let go of stuff. I even dabbled in professional organizing for a bit.. and it’s so sad how people hold on to things. We are spiritual beings, we don’t need earthly things holding us down. So if you find yourself surrounded by too much stuff, go through.. get rid of things! You can donate it and bless someone who is in need, and that is so rewarding for your soul ❤️

Have A Routine

Yes, I consider a routine to be a healthy habit! Don’t get me wrong.. life is about balance.. which also includes being flexible and going with the flow. But a routine helps hold you accountable and can help you reach goals. It’s also very helpful when trying to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine. A friend of mine was recently venting to me about not being able to keep up with her supplements and good meals. But she was always so random with both of them. So I recommended she try to establish a routine with it. To pick the meal she always eats at home: have her good meals prepped and take her supplements then. Having a routine is very helpful when your trying to get your health on track. Which normally people make the mistake of taking on too much, too quick. There is nothing wrong with starting small and slowly adding on. For example: set a goal to eat a salad everyday, or a smoothie. So you get raw greens and fruits everyday, amongst other goodness! Then slowly add to that. Everything you get something down, add the next thing.. and before you know it, it’s like second nature — aka a routine!

Surround Yourself with Positive People

Its life changing when you start connecting with your inner self & changing your life.. but with doing good.. may also come negative feedback. There will always be people who question, judge.. and just flat out hate. Haters are gonna hate. All you can is try to led by example and hope to spread the good vibes. So embrace th new faces and places you come across on your on your journey. Surround yourself with like minded people who support your new journey and encourage your growth. It’s amazing how when you start cleaning up your life, and getting in sync with your soul.. you naturally start to attach similar souls 💕

 

Evert day is a new day. A new chance to do better.. to be better. A new chance to be grateful, to learn new things.. to embrace all that life has to offer you in that moment.

Wake up every day with a grateful heart.. and a positive mind. Its a choice.. and its YOUR choice, for YOUR life

Tips for having a Healthy Relationship with Food

The American culture on how we view food.. is ALL WRONG. We are so obsessed with our food.. What sounds good.. I am craving this.. I have to have a burger.. I need something sweet. When in reality most of the things we “want” or “crave” is actually nothing our body really needs. If anything its the total opposite & contributing to our declining health.

So how do we change this? I personally changed this by rebuilding my relationship with food. My mindset, my focus, how I felt when I ate.. and I educated myself on what my body really wanted when it was having cravings.

Mind Over Matter

Half of the battle, if not more is in your mind. Food is such a way of life in our culture, and we are spoiled because we can have whatever we want.. whenever we want.. so why not? My biggest struggle when I was cutting out gluten & processed sugar of my life was my mindset. Dwelling on what I “couldn’t” or “shouldn’t” eat.. thinking “I can’t” give up these foods. I started to become bitter about it.. and eventually it lead to me falling back on my plan & eating items with gluten & sugar. It took several relapses.. my skin & stomach getting out of whack for me to finally realize I needed to change my thoughts & get it together!! Which leads me to my next tip..

Focus on What You Can Have (aka… Be Positive!)

When all you do is sit around thinking about what you “can’t” have.. it only makes you want to eat it more. As I mentioned, I cut out processed sugar & gluten out of my life, which was for Candida Overgrowth in my gut & a skin issue. When I first went gluten & sugar free.. all I thought about was the stuff I couldn’t eat. I can’t eat a donut, or cake.. No more ice cream.. No more all the desserts & things I have loved most of my life! Yes, I was having a pity party… and it took about 6 months for me to get it together & realize I need to stop focusing on what I can’t have.. and focus on what I CAN have. I can have luscious green salads, lean meats, fruits.. and vegetables. I can open my mind to new foods & arise to the challenge of finding healthy alternatives to the things I love. The moment I focused on all the good I could have.. A big door opened & I was introduced to a whole new world of foods.

Eat with a Purpose in Mind

I hate to be the barrier of bad news.. but eating is not a luxury! It is the means to which we fuel our bodies. So its time to start treating it that way.. You can do it.. I promise!! Do the research, understand what your body needs to thrive & supply your body with it.

Practice Gratitude

Be grateful for the food you are eating. Be grateful that you have a healthy meal that is going to nourish your body. If you are a religious person.. there is a good chance you say a prayer before you eat.. but you can even take it further than that. With every bit of food, thoroughly chew your food.. feel the texture.. taste the different flavor. Eating a wholesome meal can be a spiritual experience! It may sound silly.. but don’t knock it until you try it!

Understanding the Root of Cravings

Your body is a magnificent machine that tells you everything you need to know.. You just have to know how to listen. Getting your mind right, understanding how to fuel your body, & appreciating nutritious foods will all help in building a healthy relationship with food.. but there is a physical aspect to understand as well.

Coming from an “Ex Sugar-aholic”.. Food cravings are the worst. The even harder part is that all the processed, chemical filled foods we eat.. most of which are loaded up with sugar, are highly addictive & leave us stripped of the nutrition we need. So our bodies are not only going to send out cravings for the nutrition it needs, but also for the junk that it is withdrawing from. So next time your craving something salty or sweet.. Try to figure out what your body really needs.

Overcoming the typical “American diet” and building a new relationship with food isn’t necessarily going to be easy.. or an overnight fix. Most of us have years of bad habits to undo.. but each day is a new day.. and a chance to make better choices.

Be positive.. You CAN make changes.. You CAN overcome anything you set your mind to!

How Yoga Taught Me to Meditate, Stretch & So Much More

Yoga is phenomenal for your mind, body, & soul. Yet many may never try it, because they are scared of it, don’t know where to start..or think it’s just not for them. No one wants to be the new person in the hour long yoga class, struggling, & confused. Thankfully I found a great solution to starting yoga & I gained more from it than I could ever expect.

Years ago, I came across yoga DVD from Gaiam called AM Yoga for Your Week. It’s a series of 5 different yoga segments, about 25 minutes each.. that is very basic, yet very beneficial. The thing I appreciated most about the DVD was the instructor guidance throughout each segment. Yoga Master Rodney Yee, not only has an incredibly relaxing voice (lol), but he really breaks down each move, tells you what your body should feel like, reminds to breath & relax.

I personally, am a little on the high-strung side & it is so hard for me to sit still, relax, & clear my mind. When I first started doing this DVD my intentions were to merely learn some basic yoga. With time I learned to really listen to the instructor.. to focus on my breathing.. and to feel every move my body was making.

Before I knew it I went from high-strung.. could never clear my mind.. to meditating! It was amazing!! And the stretching techniques I learned I have carried over into a stretching routine I do after every workout. I have also created my own yoga/meditation routine out of this that I do in the morning or evening.

Learning to focus on my breathing & feeling how my body moves has assisted me in being able to be calm.. which in turn has helped me become more spiritual & manage my anxiety.

The list of yoga benefits goes on.. and on. Just the stretching alone will improve your blood flow, increase flexibility & range of motion in your joints.. which helps prevent injury! Most importantly, it improves overall wellness for your mind, body, & soul.

It doesn’t matter where or how you are getting started.. Just give it a chance! A great resource I have found recently is the GaiamTV website. It has an extensive collection of Yoga videos, even for beginners.. it also has other fitness videos, health, & spiritual resources. So you can try it from the comfort of your own home! (It’s like a healthy Netflix..lol.)

The only downside.. is the more you do it.. the more your body wants it! I guess you could say its a healthy addiction 😉

Finding A Happier and Healthier You

Many people run from or rebel against the ideal image of “being healthy”.. because of all the standards that come with it. It is so easy to become overwhelmed when searching for ways to improve your health & happiness, especially with all the information available now.

I believe, where people go wrong is listening to everyone else’s standards.. Do this.. do that.. eat this.. don’t eat that! It’s very understandable that someone reaches the point of total frustration & abandons ship all together.

The solution? Set your own standards! Listen to your own body! Yes.. be open-minded to advice and knowledge others can provide you with.. but ultimately you know your body best.. and what fuels your mind, body, & soul.

Being healthy is nothing more than nourishing your body.. Finding what fuels you & helps you be a better person overall. It’s not about “dieting” and restricting yourself. Which may be difficult to see in the world we live in today.. because what is “natural” has become the abnormal & what is “unnatural” is what is normal.

I can’t tell you how many times I hear.. “What you don’t drink sodas?”… “You don’t eat gluten?”… “You avoid processed sugar?”.. You must be so deprived!!

Well I am not deprived.. I am thriving! Those things are so unnatural for your body, and in return they have very negative effects on you.

Come to find out my high sugar diet was one of the sources of my skin problems (next to gluten), it created fuel for my anxiety & even triggered depression. I use to turn to sugar to calm me.. and little did I know the real damage it was causing until it started to cut it out of my diet.

The scariest part was how addicted I was to processed sugars & foods. The more I had them.. the more my body wanted them. It seemed impossible at first to overcome the cravings.. especially with sugar. But the less I had them.. the less my body began to want them.

As long as I don’t sit around thinking about that things I shouldn’t eat.. and focus on the things that make me feel good.. I feel good. I now satisfy my sweet tooth with dark chocolate & fruit.. and body craves spinach salads filled with vegetables.

It’s unbelievable how you can retrain your body.. if you just give it a chance. It’s not an overnight process & sometimes you may get off track. I started this process a few years ago, and I am still growing and making changes.

I do not know all the answers.. all the right ways.. but I do know the healthier choices I make.. the better my body feels. Which lifts my spirit & ultimately makes me a happier & healthier me.

So I challenge you — What steps could you make? Could you add more fresh greens to your life? Cut out sodas? Eat less fried & processed foods? Find healthier alternatives for the things you like?

Prescription For Nutritional Healing – A book by Phyllis A. Balch CNC. This was referred to me as the Bible for the Nutrition world.. and I have to agree! This first section of the book explains all the basics of nutrition, and the second section is a A-Z reference for drug free remedies. Its a must have!!

The Mastery of Love – A book by Don Miguel Ruiz. A practical guide of the Art of Relationship that explains how fear-based beliefs and assumptions that undermine love and lead to suffering in our relationships. I am currently reading this book & I highly suggest it as a must read. Not just for relationship guidance, but for self love and understanding how fear truly holds us back.
